This is a question we get often- what to expect and what to wear? There are some particular features of our climate that are not so common elsewhere. First, because La Palma is so far out in the ocean, it’s temperatures are stabilized by the water mass. There is relatively little variation between the seasons and between night and day. For Los Sauces the typical summer temperature will be around 24 degrees while it winter it only drops to 18. The extremes- the coldest and hottest day of our lives here- would be between 12 and 33. Pretty acceptable by European standards.

If the day temperature is 18 degrees it will only drop to around 16 at nights.

Rain is more frequent in winter while it summer it usually does not rain. Being a tropical location you have always to account for the sun. On any clear day, even in winter, full sun will be adding a lot to the temperature.

In other La Palma locations the temperature is affected by the elevation. The lower you get the milder the climate. Our neighboring San Andres is usually a few degrees warmer on cold days- again thanks to the stabilizing influence of the ocean. And the higher you get the colder it is (except for some calima weather). Most years there are days with snow on the highest peaks.

So to sum it up- you can come to La Palma to cool off in summer and to stay warm in winter!

Our little island is just as good- or in many aspects probably better- than most popular cycling destinations like Tenerife or Mallorca. At the same time we estimate that the island gets 1/100 of the cycling visitors of the other islands. Why is that? A mystery, really. One possible reason is it is quite demanding. Being the steepest island in the world by some accounts it is not the best for novices. The other reason may be the limited offer of flights and accommodation. Third, the weather here is just a little bit more unpredictable than on, say, south Tenerife. But other than that it’s a dream come true: incredible variety. Empty roads, especially in the north. Beautiful landscapes (unlike south Tenerife!). Charming little towns.

It is now possible to rent locally all kinds of bicycles, including electric ones. So climbing to Roque de los Muchachos at 2426m from sea level is accessible for everyone.

There are multiple roads and trails for road cycling, gravel cycling and mountain biking. La Palma is the best kept secret around so I recommend you come here instead of where the crowds go. We are cyclists ourselves so we can recommend the best routes and we have good place to store your bike.

Hello, lovers of nature and the good life! From Hostal Bubango, your haven in San Andrés y Sauces, we want to invite you to lace up your boots and explore the treasures hidden in our municipality.

The Star Route: Nacientes de Marcos y Cordero

If there is one route you cannot miss, it is the Nacientes de Marcos y Cordero. It is, quite simply, a magical immersion in the heart of the laurisilva (laurel forest), where water is the main protagonist.

The route passes through a dozen tunnels excavated into the rock, following the course of a channel that captures water from the springs. Crossing these galleries, with the constant sound of water, is a unique and refreshing experience. After the tunnels, the path transforms into a spectacular descent through the Barranco del Agua (Water Ravine) until you reach the fascinating Bosque de Los Tilos (Los Tilos Forest), one of the jewels of the Biosphere Reserve. It is a walk through a genuine prehistoric forest!

Pay attention to this: The “classic” route begins at Casa del Monte (access by taxi/arranged transport) and descends to Los Tilos, avoiding the long uphill walk. Ask at reception, and we will help you organize the transport.

Recommendations Before Setting Out

This route is of medium-high difficulty and requires good planning. Here are our essential tips:

Light and Water: A headlamp is essential for the tunnels. Although the water is very tempting, bring your own drinking water and some food.

Equipment: A good raincoat or waterproof jacket is fundamental—Tunnel 12 will give you a watery surprise! Dress in layers and wear sturdy, waterproof hiking boots.

Hours: Access to Casa del Monte has limited hours (usually until 2:00 PM in summer and 12:30 PM in winter). It is crucial to start early, ideally with the first taxi, to avoid rushing.

Caution: This is a trail with some narrow sections and wet passages. It is not recommended to do the route on very rainy days or if it has rained heavily beforehand, as the water flow in the tunnels and the ravine increases.

Other Wonders of San Andrés y Sauces

If you are looking for more accessible options, San Andrés y Sauces offers other trails:

Bosque de Los Tilos (Short): If you only want the essence, the short trail to the Cascada de Los Tilos (Los Tilos Waterfall) and the Visitor Center is perfect for the whole family.

Ruta del Cubo de la Galga (Cubo de la Galga Route): A circular and slightly shorter trail that allows you to enter another beautiful corner of the laurel forest.

Ask us at Hostal Bubango, and we will give you detailed information to make your adventure perfect.

The most charming village in the north of La Palma

To visit the village of San Andrés, in the northeast of La Palma, you have to cross the largest single-arch bridge in Spain. Once you cross it, you will arrive at one of the most charming villages on the island, which was the capital of the region for centuries, as evidenced by its centuries-old mansions belonging to wealthy merchants. Its small church, San Andrés Apóstol, has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest and contains important examples of the island’s rich religious heritage.

Cobbled streets and walks to the coast

With the sea always in view, the cobbled streets of San Andrés remain as they were centuries ago, and its houses with large windows are a sight to behold. The center of the village revolves around the church and the beautiful square of the same name, a combination that is almost unique on the island. If you feel like walking to the coast, you can take the promenade that leads to Charco Azul to enjoy a well-deserved swim.

A rum saga in San Andrés y Sauces

At Trapiche El Melonar, you can learn about the history of sugar cane, the so-called sugar families, and sugar cane in La Palma. You can also see how they respect the original recipe by distilling the juice from freshly pressed cane directly in a copper still over a fire.

A tasty morning of tasting

To cater to everyone, they offer a video and multilingual guides that detail the production process throughout the tour of the distillery. From the planting of the sugar cane, through the press and, of course, the essential still, at the end of the tour you can taste their rums or buy them in the adjoining museum shop if you need to take the car. The visit must be booked on their website and costs five euros per person plus tasting. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is only available for part of the visit.
